"I am proud to be a WWF Earth Hour Ambassador and to help do all I can to preserve the planet in a good state for future generations. It is my belief that one the severest defects of our civilisation is the imbalanced way in which our rational side is emphasised at the expense of our intuitive side. The result has been what someone described as our 'nature deficit disorder.' Nature is reduced and distanced to a set of inert objects governed by laws of physics that can be controlled and that we are no longer a part of. We no longer know where our food, our fresh water or even our clean air come from, nor where our waste goes to. Such separation breeds indifference and hubris: we take all the fish from the sea, we cut down all the rainforest and so on. If you actually see the results of your actions hopefully you are more likely to take more responsibility for them. And if your intuitive connection to nature is stronger and you emphasise more with it, you will be less likely to abuse it. In my work I try to do all I can to rebuild that connection to nature -- to that which gives us life. We are just one part of it. A lifestyle is only sustainable if it can be continued indefinitely at the expense of nobody and no thing. There is precious little in our lifestyle that fits this, and we need to be aware that the sacrifices required to achieve true sustainability for all are far greater than anything so far proposed. But lets not be put off by this, and do everything we can now."
